Dragster #4 - The "RCS" Car

In February 1967 GSTA ordered it’s fourth, but first “New” car from Race Car Specialties (RCS) in California. It was very light, 1050 pounds with many magnesium parts and had much success in Division 5 and at National meets.

During this time the Stuckey/Hemi was ably run by a second crew and was looked on as a training base. A lot of good natured rivalry came from that. The RCS ran in AAG/D and the Stuckey ran in BBG/D. The GSTA was runner-up at the ’68 Springnationals at Englishtown NJ and had several outstanding paint jobs by Jon Kosmoski  and won many best appearing car and crew awards.

The GSTA tied for the NHRA Division 5 Top gas Championship in 1968. In 1969 GSTA won the Can/Am Top Gas Championship in Winnepeg. The #1 crew also earned the Best Appearing Crew award at the US Nationals in Indy in 1969.

This was also the start of the “backward scoop” tradition. Head wrench,Ray Ruettiman found that all the cylinders would burn evenly with the scoop or scoops backwards. Prior to that, the back cylinders would lean out and burn pistons. We never lost a piston to lean condition after we turned the scoops around, although we did take a lot of ribbing.

The now infamous ‘Wheelie “ picture came about after the crew replaced the original Magnesium Halibrand rear end with an Olds rear end.
This upset the balance of the car and caused many wheelstands after that.
